On April 2024, the Uganda Constitutional Court decision upheld the discriminatory, vaguely defined and dangerous Anti-Homosexuality Act (AHA) 2023, following a challenge by lawyers, human rights activists, journalists, academics and religious leaders.
The petitioners argued that the AHA violates fundamental rights guaranteed in Uganda’s Constitution, including the prohibition of discrimination and degrading treatment, the protection of privacy, and the rights to freedom of expression and freedom of association.
The AHA, which came into effect on 30 May 2023, enhances existing colonial-era laws imposed on Uganda by the British, that already outlawed consensual, same-sex sexual activity.
